2026 Cateran Yomp

Chef Robert Irvine, the Robert Irvine Foundation Team, and our Incredible Sponsors and Donors,

We, the Marines of the 1st Battalion, 5th Marines Association, alongside our families, are writing to express our deepest, most heartfelt gratitude for your willingness to support such a deeply meaningful cause.

The message below represents the compiled summary of our group’s official After Action Review (AAR) discussion, which took place upon our return home from Scotland. It details the strategic breakthroughs, internal shifts, and operational plans built directly from our time together.

Because of the Robert Irvine Foundation's vision, your belief and trust, and your extraordinary financial backing and flawless execution, 105 of us were granted a life-changing opportunity to step off the grid, face the silence of the Highlands, and completely alter the trajectory of our lives. You didn't just sponsor a 54-mile hike through the mud of Scotland; you funded a life-saving sanctuary.

Out of the mind-and-body fog of the trail, our collective tribe discovered profound, universal truths that we want to share directly with you, so you can see the exact return on your investment:

Facing the Silence & Reclaiming Identity

In the daily grind of civilian life, it is easy for veterans to run from their own thoughts, burying burdens under endless external tasks just to "push through the objective." Years of high-tempo survival create thick emotional calluses that suppress grief, pain, and the memories of lost life.

Your generosity forced the noise to go silent. Whether it took a quiet, rhythmic stretch at the back of the pack to realize we need to "run our own race," or it took until mile 53.5 in deep conversation with a fellow veteran, the breakthroughs came. We realized that in solving everyone else's problems, we had taken ourselves off our own priority list. Standing in the discomfort of the Highlands brought an overwhelming sense of gratitude for the struggle, reminding us that true clarity is paid for in sweat, endurance, and love.

Dropping the Armor in a Place with "No BS"

The heaviest burden of coming home is isolation. As one of our fellow Marines beautifully put it on the trail: "When I am around fellow veterans I don't have to pretend... here I don't have to pretend at all." You created a space defined by shared suffering—with no drama, no fluff, and no chest-beating. Because of this, our warriors realized that the "wall of defense" doesn't need to be up. There is simply no need for it during this experience. We have all proven ten times over that we are tough. Now is the season of our lives to express compassion, vulnerability, and openness, and to mentor from a position of hard-learned lessons. Pushing through the pain, sharing unresolved challenges, or simply looking to the left and right to see a brother or sister standing fast in the dark, is what pulled so many of us out of the darkness.

Bringing the Best Version Back to the Home Front

The strength, clarity, and honesty we unlocked on this journey cannot be left behind in the mud. It belongs to our families now. Our spouses, children, and loved ones look to us for stability.

Because we were given the space to heal on this trip, we are intentionally adapting our tactical mindset into a relationship mindset. We are bringing home an unshakeable commitment to be fully engaged, to listen more, and to lead by example. We will not leave the best version of ourselves in Scotland. We are keeping it with us wherever we go.

The Way Forward: Our Continued Execution

To ensure your investment in us continues to yield returns for years to come, we are turning these breakthroughs into permanent, structured execution back home:

  • No-Armor Zones & Micro-Dosing Truth: We are breaking the default "I'm good" response and practicing raw honesty within our inner circles.
  • The Comm Checks & Regional Sectors: We are establishing robust communication channels and mapping out regional sectors to host local meetups, ensuring no veteran is left isolated.
  • Long-Term Success: We plan to build a structured framework to carry these healing experiences back into our communities, utilizing our personal networks and media platforms to expand the foundation's reach for others in need.

A Meaningful Thank You from the 1/5 Tribe

To all the participants this year: thank you for opening up and allowing us to get to know you as you got to know us. We really dance beautifully together.

Every donor, sponsor, and team member at the Robert Irvine Foundation deserves to know the weight of what they have accomplished. You gave 105 participants the exact crucible required to step out of the "tough cage," reclaim our personal identities, and find the tools to survive the "daily challenges" back home.

Because you chose to step up and secure this opportunity for us, marriages are being strengthened, fathers and mothers are being restored to their children, and veterans are stepping back into the light. Together, through the raw medicine of nature, shared misery, and unbreakable brotherhood, we are completely transforming our future through natural healing.

Your 1st Battalion, 5th Marines family is always here. We look forward to continuing to grow our incredible relationships as we support our service members and their families.

Semper Fidelis,

Ryan Ackerman

    7 1/5 Marines, 54 miles, 24 hours

The Cateran Yomp is the biggest, toughest event of its kind. Every year, hundreds of Yompers gather in the Scottish wilderness to battle through the foothills of the Cairngorm Mountains, walking continuously for 54 miles over 24 hours*. Based on an infamous long-distance military training march, it takes every ounce of grit you possess.  And every single step helps our mission: to be there for soldiers, for veterans, for their families. For life.

The Yomp is more than a physical test; it’s a powerful path to healing and rediscovering purpose through shared hardship and teamwork. Pushing forward together in an unforgiving environment, veterans reconnect with resilience, camaraderie, and a mission-focused mindset, transforming endurance into healing and strength.
